Feb. 6th, 2008 04:58 amI can't sleep, I'm nervous about my interview tomorrow, and so I'm researching the place I'm interviewing online, and I JUST FOUND AN ARTICLE IN THEIR NEWSLETTER THAT SAYS CATS CAN GET HEARTWORMS TOO. Apparently it's not as common as for dogs, but it's untreatable--to kill the heartworm would kill the cat. Tests don't positively diagnose heartworms for cats as well, either. WHAT WHY DON'T I KNOW ABOUT THIS! I'm going to look into it more, and try to find out what side effects may be caused by heartworm preventative in cats, but I might get it for zooey and flynn. It says that 30% of the cats who get heartworms are indoor cats, so I guess I have to worry about it too. Hopefully it's not way expensive, but I don't want my guys to get heartworms, that's scary! Anyway, I've been reading more about it online, and it seems like it's at least something to look into, especially since this area is considered to be endemic for heartworm infection in dogs. It is transmitted by mosquitos, though, so at least they're somewhat safe in the winter. Still, I like to protect my cats as much as I can--I even brush their teeth twice a week so they'll have less dental problems when they get older, and I give them a special kind of rabies and distemper vaccinations every year instead of every three years because purevax doesn't cause the little reaction lumps that I have to watch for 3 months to make sure they don't turn in to cancerous lumps. Oh well, at least I found out about it. Did you know there's a new vaccine that helps prevent periodontal disease? That sounds pretty cool, dental problems can be so expensive, and not everyone's animals submit to tooth brushing like mine do. Ok that is my entry about vet things.
